How to tell if my pet is dehydrated

Dehydration occurs when animals lose more water and electrolytes than the body is currently taking in.  If this becomes severe it can become dangerous.  Here are a few ways to check if your pet is dehydrated at home that might prompt a veterinary visit.

  1. Check gums and elasticity of skin – gently lift your pets lip and pinch the skin over their neck region. If the gums feel sticky or the skin doesn’t immediately go back to normal then they are likely dehydrated.
  2. Other physical signs of dehydration include eyes sunken further into the head than usual, unwilling to walk, eat or drink, concentrated smelling urine or darker color than usual.

If you are ever unsure or your pet is displaying signs of dehydration please have them seen by a veterinarian right away.

This is a busy little clinic. The lobby is small and bustling, which doesn’t leave much space for privacy if you are bringing in an anxious or sick pet, but the staff are friendly and the veterinarian and techs are caring and attentive. I was there meeting the owner of a cat rescue who had agreed to take in my neighbor’s cats after she had passed away. I was able to attend the appointment for one of the kitties. They do a lot of trap neuter return procedures for strays, so while I was there, the hallway was full of covered carriers. A great low-cost resource for pet owners. They’re doing good work for the community.

They did a great job with my cat, and the cost was extremely reasonable! Definitely recommended.

I took my 10 month old Cavapoo here yesterday to get spayed. I have to say I am extremely pleased with my experience and will recommend them to everyone. Not only was the staff friendly, helpful and took great care of my girl but Ellie is already acting normal and so far there’s been no negative reaction to the surgery. She was drowsy yesterday but that’s to be expected. She’s eating and drinking normally and is taking her meds easily. I’m very pleased with my experience! Thank you again to the staff for taking such great care of my sweet girl
