As pets grow older, many begin to slow down, nap more often, or show less enthusiasm for their favorite activities. While these changes can seem like a normal part of aging, arthritis is one of the most common reasons senior dogs and cats lose mobility. Because pets can’t tell us when something hurts, it’s important for owners to notice the subtle signs early and get them the care they need.

At Low Cost Veterinary Surgical Clinic of Scottsdale, we are committed to providing affordable, high-quality care so senior pets can remain active, healthy, and comfortable well into their golden years.

Why Pets Develop Arthritis

Arthritis happens when the cartilage that cushions joints wears down. Without this protective barrier, bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation. While aging is the primary factor, arthritis can also affect younger pets — especially those carrying extra weight, those with prior injuries, or certain breeds that are genetically predisposed to joint problems.

Early Signs of Arthritis to Watch For

Arthritis often develops slowly, which makes early detection tricky. Look for these changes in your pet’s behavior and mobility:

  • Limping or stiffness, especially after sleeping or resting

  • Difficulty climbing stairs, jumping into the car, or getting onto furniture

  • Shorter walks or reduced interest in playtime

  • Trouble moving across slippery or uneven surfaces

  • Behavioral changes, including irritability or avoidance of touch

How to Spot Arthritis in Your Senior Pet Early

Affordable Options for Managing Arthritis

Although arthritis cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed to improve your pet’s comfort and quality of life. Our veterinarians may recommend:

  • Weight management and nutrition support — extra weight increases stress on joints.

  • Joint-supportive supplements — such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids to support cartilage health.

  • Safe pain management medications — to reduce discomfort and improve daily activity.

  • Lifestyle adjustments at home — ramps, non-slip rugs, and orthopedic beds can make mobility easier.

Helping Pets Stay Comfortable in Their Senior Years

A diagnosis of arthritis doesn’t mean your pet has to stop enjoying the things they love. With the right veterinary care, supplements, and simple lifestyle changes, senior dogs and cats can continue to thrive. At Low Cost Veterinary Surgical Clinic of Scottsdale, our goal is to provide compassionate and affordable care that helps pets live their best life at every stage. We'd like to thank you for taking such good care of our kitties Blu and Jackie. Your team made the whole process of getting them both neutered on the same day so much less stressful than we thought it was going to be. From booking the appointment to dropping them off with Sage in the morning to pickup in the afternoon, the "whole" AZ Spay Neuter Clinic - Scottsdale team was very helpful and comforting. Blu and Jackie are doing great. Thank you very much!

This is a busy little clinic. The lobby is small and bustling, which doesn’t leave much space for privacy if you are bringing in an anxious or sick pet, but the staff are friendly and the veterinarian and techs are caring and attentive. I was there meeting the owner of a cat rescue who had agreed to take in my neighbor’s cats after she had passed away. I was able to attend the appointment for one of the kitties. They do a lot of trap neuter return procedures for strays, so while I was there, the hallway was full of covered carriers. A great low-cost resource for pet owners. They’re doing good work for the community.
